TEER (Transcatheter End to End Repair) with MitraClip

Transcatheter End to End Repair (TEER) is a catheter based minimally invasive procedure designed to repair mitral valves by putting a catheter in a vein in the leg and placing a small clip on the edges of the mitral valve to permanently reduce leaking.

Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Regurgitation (or leaking) can be caused by a weak heart muscle (also called cardiomyopathy) or a problem with a portion of the valve failing to work properly, also called degenerative mitral regurgitation. Leaking produces symptoms of heart failure:

  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue
  • cough
  • excessive urination
  • fainting
  • swollen feet and ankles
  • inability to tolerate exercise
  • decreased appetite

These symptoms can greatly affect quality of life and can also require hospitalization for management.

Innovative Technology

In the past, the only way to manage this concern was open heart surgery. With this procedure, patients can experience less symptoms and improved quality of life without a large incision, a lengthy hospital stay or the use of a heart bypass machine.

Our team utilizes the MitraClip system which is completed by accessing a vein in the groin and using a catheter to implant a clip along the edges of the mitral valve to reduce the size of the opening and therefore reducing the aberrant flow and improving symptoms.

Less Invasive- Return to Living Life Faster

The procedure is done with anesthesia but is usually completed in less than 2 hours. There are minimal post procedure restrictions, so patients can return to living normal life within 1 week. Many patients have reduced need for diuretic medications and relay improvement in symptoms in as little as 1 month after the procedure.

Our Experienced Team

Colorado Springs Cardiology has been performing TEER since June of 2015.
